Carnival Workshop

16th July 2006

Magennis Hall
Rowner

Morning Session: 10am 'till 12 Noon
Afternoon Session: 1pm 'till 3pm

Showing how theme, colour, processes and designs can contribute to a vibrant participatory carnival procession.

The workshops are intended to show those aged 16+ how to make costumes, so
that they can produce costumes with children and young people. There will be further opportunities for people to meet and to continue working on their costumes.

Anyone attending these workshops can show their costumes by participating
in the Rowner Carnival, OR the Seafield Carnival, OR any other carnival,
but we would really love it if everyone could attend the Alive & Kicking
Carnival on 8th July, when the carnival will be part of the static Alive &
Kicking event at Walpole Park on 8 July.

Fruit and drink will be provided midday, if the morning group would liketo meet the afternoon group, and if the afternoon group would like to meet
the morning group!

You will need to book for these workshops as places (and materials!) are
limited.

The Schedule of events is as follows:

Introduction of team,Introduction of Workshop How each person will design and make a costume for themselves using techniques shown, and then come back to make costumes for other members of their group/family.

Explain how themes are used within Carnival, e.g. Global Challenge had 7 sections which were each of the ports the race stopped at.

Explain how 2 or 3 colours per group look stunning on mass showing examples from other Carnivals

Explain how using simple techniques, it can become an activity children can take part in, under supervision of an adult.

Each person takes a figure template and designs their own costume. They should use the Carnival themes and decide on up to 3 colours.

Each person makes their template out of gold card and once this has been achieved, they can start on their foam/card costumes.

Everyone should finish the session with a costume for themselves and knowledge on how to make it, to pass on to children/other group members.
