Remember to lock you bicycle up!
Toward the end of 2005
Gosport saw a dramatic increase in cycle. Every effort was made to combat these thefts and we were pleased to see a reduction in stolen cycles and the persons responsible arrested. However of late there has been a slight increase and it would appear that it is down to the cycle thief being gifted cycles that are left unlocked. These thefts can easily be avoided with adequate cycle security. Quite often cycle owners do not secure their bike or only use flimsy inadequate locks that can be broken off quite easily be a cycle thief.
Cycling is a popular activity in Gosport , not just for commuters but for leisure. Read one and use some of the tips on cycle security to prevent your cycle being stolen. Purchase and use a substantial lock, like a thick chain and padlock, and have the bike coded. This is a unique code that is placed on the cycle almost undetectable. If your bike was stolen and recovered, this code that the Police are able to locate and read would enable us identify the owner and return their cycle to them. Please contact the Police Station for details on cycle coding.
We can stop this. We are urging cycle owners to take their cycle’s security seriously. Stop using the flimsy inadequate locks. Invest in substantial heavyweight locks. The best locks are often heavy thick chains secured with a substantial padlock. Always secure your cycle to a fixed point such as a cycle rack and lock your cycle up in a public area.
Don’t think it wont happen to you, it may only be a matter of time, and you increase the chances of losing your cycle when it’s not locked up adequately.
Don’t become complacent. Cycles are just as likely to be stolen from your garden whether they are locked up or not. Lock your cycles up within in the shed or garage. If you have no shed or garage, consider purchasing a cycle storage container, fix it securely to the ground, lock your cycle within in it and lock the container up using a substantial padlock.
Investing in locks and storage containers and taking the extra time to ensure your cycle is lock and stored away adequately is not to be considered as an inconvenience. It is more inconvenient when you go to use your cycle and discover it missing and subsequently have the huge inconvenience of contacting the police, insurance companies and trying to arrange the purchase of a new cycle.
