The Poetry Box scheme came about following a conversation between the Mayor’s son Jess, and
Daniel Roberts a former friend from St Vincent College. Daniel started a Poetry Box scheme on the Isle of Wight in 2000. A keen poet, he encouraged people to write poetry and then
submit them for the local authority to display. The scheme proved so popular, they now have 8 boxes and the poems have been transferred onto various sites for visitors to read.
Jess, himself a keen poet, and The Mayor, Councillor June Cully were so taken with the idea, a Poetry Box has now been installed in the main reception of the Town Hall. “There are many times where we have to sit and wait; either for transport, appointments or even for friends for lunch,” said June. “So why not take advantage of that time and put pen to paper and write a verse or two which can then be shared with others. Poems will also be displayed, hopefully encouraging others to take part.”
